My new single, Pure Imagination, releases February 27!
This song is one of my absolute favorites. It has always encouraged me to “stay curious” and find the whimsy in everyday life.
Like a lot of people, I first heard it while watching Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory as a kid. I was captivated and maybe just a bit unsettled (if you know, you know). The song feels magical, but there’s something underneath it that keeps you leaning in.
Written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the harmony shifts just when you think you know where it’s going. You don’t fully feel “home” until the very end, and that unpredictability fits the story so well.
I’ve been playing this tune for a couple years now with my friends Kyle Aho (keys), and Matt Streuber (bass). Somewhere along the way, I knew I wanted to record it. When we got into Studio 2100 here in Springfield, we put it down in a single take.
